What is nexus?
In Scottsdale, businesses must understand “nexus” to determine their tax obligations. Nexus refers to the connection that requires a business to collect sales tax in a state. This concept became even more important after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., which allowed states to require sales tax collection based on economic activity rather than just a physical presence.
Specific sales tax rules for Scottsdale
Scottsdale levies a 5% transient lodging tax on hotel stays and short-term rentals of 29 days or less. Half of this revenue supports tourism promotion, while the other half funds tourism-related events, research, capital projects, and other eligible uses.
Businesses in Scottsdale are also subject to a Business Personal Property Tax on items like machinery, equipment, and furniture. Mobile homes may also be taxed. Businesses must file an annual property statement, and exemptions may apply to charitable organizations with county assessor approval.
Personal property taxes are billed by the County Treasurer, and property tax rates for 2023/24 include a combined rate of $0.9814 per $100 of assessed property value, split into primary and secondary tax rates of $0.5150 and $0.4464, respectively.
