What is nexus?
In Chandler, businesses must understand “nexus” to determine their tax obligations. Nexus refers to the connection that requires a business to collect sales tax in a state. This concept became even more important after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., which allowed states to require sales tax collection based on economic activity rather than just a physical presence.
Specific sales tax rules for Chandler
Restaurants and bars are taxed at 1.8%, utilities and telecommunications at 2.75%, and transient lodging at 2.9%.
For vehicle purchases, the Arizona Department of Transportation checks if sales tax was paid at the time of purchase when you register the vehicle. If no tax, or a lower tax than the Arizona state and city rates, was paid in the state of purchase, the state use tax must be paid to the Arizona Department of Revenue during registration. You will then be notified to pay the city use tax based on where the vehicle is registered. This tax is calculated on the vehicle’s purchase price, minus any trade-in value, and applies to automobiles, boats, trailers, and most aircraft.
